TrueCrypt is a free, open source program which allows secure encryption of data stored on any devices. TrueCrypt may create virtual disks hidden in files, which might be mounted in the file system as HDD. It is also possible to encrypt whole partitions.

The encryption is On-The-Fly. The read and write speed depends on the type of used algorithm. You may choose one of the following: AES-256, Blowfish (448 bit), CAST5, Serpent, Triple DES, Twofish. It is also possible to use a few algorithms together. However, the AES, which is recommended by the USA government for secret data, should be enough. The encryption causes decrease of performance, yet you may still watch movies stored in encrypted partition with no problems.

Access to the data is gained after typing a password or pointing a key-file, which may be stored on a USB drive. The keys are more secure, because they're longer and it's quite impossible to break them using the brute-force attack. TrueCrypt allows you to create a hidden volume. The good password gives you access to the secret date, but the bad one shows only fake data.
